While America struggles to wield its burgeoning super power, six women volunteer for tours of duty in Vietnam that will test their every limit and alter the courses of their lives. Based on true stories related in the book of the same name by Keith Walker, A Piece of My Heart portrays the strengths, weaknesses and sheer endurance of six female volunteers in Vietnam, both military and civilian. It embraces the music, confusion, heroism, and idealism of the late 60s, portraying both the womens’ sorrows and their intense joys. Ms. Lauro’s play looks beyond politics to reflect on the incredible human experience of living and working in the midst of violence and chaos — and surviving. No matter one’s opinion on the merits of Vietnam or Iraq, this tale of women in a conflict that forever changed America’s relationship to war is searingly relevant today.
