Rebecca Taylor directs the New York premiere of Caryl Churchill and David Lan’s A Mouthful of Birds. Inspired by Euripides’ The Bacchae, the dance-theatre piece weaves together seven stories of separate contemporary lives to reveal those days when one is “possessed,” still vulnerable to Dionysian influence. The god of wine and mirth gets under each character’s cardigan, driving women to telekinesis, men into the arms of pigs, and everybody into fits of primal dance.
