The very first play of The Pearl Theatre Company’s very first season was Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Shakespeare seems to have gotten a good deal smarter in the 20 years since. At that time, the play was about anti-semitism. It has matured into a play about the curse of the ruling class, of that privileged, homogenious fraternity in which hatred, xenophobia and prejudice of all kinds become so woven into the fabric that the brotherhood actually perceives these evils as threads of virtue, as moral superiority.
The opening night performance on Sunday, November 2 starts at 7pm. For further exceptions to the performance schedule, visit Pearl’s website at www.pearltheatre.org.
