About This Show

The Maids X 2, directed by Lane Savadove, is the inaugural co-production from EgoPo/Cocteau. It features two versions of the play in the same evening — an all-female cast and an all-male cast. Jean Genet’s The Maids is a controversial one-act play based on true and sensational events of a brutal murder by two unassuming maids of their mistress in 1930s France. The critically acclaimed French playwright was inspired by the mystery surrounding the two murderous sisters when he wrote this disturbing, sexually charged, and beautifully theatrical play.

The female production is played with the buoyancy and vitality of a fully-realized fantasy world. In the male version, the audience experiences the rawness of Genet himself struggling for greatness, as he wrote the play while living in prison, imagining the life of two inferior servants.

Beginning Friday, April 14, only the female version of the EgoPo/Cocteau production of Jean Genet’s The Maids will be performed due to a rights issue, and the need to implement changes to the male version of the play.
