About the Show

In 1999, director Peter Brook worked with South African actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona on re-staging The Island, Athol Fugard’s heart-wrenching, apartheid-era play set in South Africa’s most notorious prison for political dissidents. This spring, Kani and Ntshona reprise their 1975 Tony-Award winning roles as cellmates who rise above the tedium and brutality of prison life through camaraderie, incessant bickering, and, intriguingly, nightly rehearsals of Sophocles’ Antigone.

“Few works of art present so profound a critique of a political system that they help to change it. The island is one.”
— The Times (UK)

There is an additional performance on Saturday, April 12 at 2:00pm.
