About This Show

French opera never yielded a femme as fatale as Carmen. Her seductive exoticism, aggressive self-determination, and dramatic demise not only shocked the opera’s first audiences, but also paved the way for daring verismo opera. Today, Bizet’s smoldering title character and intoxicating music continues to seduce City Opera audiences. The melodically rapturous score is peppered with some of opera’s most popular tunes, including the vivacious “Toreador Song” and perhaps the most famous aria of all, the “Habanera” (“L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”).

Gripping drama, lush orchestrations, exemplary vocal writing, and a colorful Spanish setting all make Bizet’s tragedy of obsessive love both an operatic masterpiece and a spectacular evening of theater.
