About the Show
Devin Kessler (Crystal Lake; Godfather of Harlem) stars in Saved Messages, directed by Donathan Walters (Fences at The Old Globe; Paramount+’s Evil). What do you do with the messages you can’t bring yourself to delete? This funny, raw, and resonant new one-woman play by Carlita Victoria, founder of Darkness RISING Project, uses humor, vulnerability, recorded voices, and phones from different eras to follow one woman through a mental health crisis and the systems that respond to it. It asks what happens when someone in crisis meets institutions built to police, contain, or punish rather than care, and what becomes possible when we center connection, dignity, and community instead. Dramaturgy by Daphnie Sicre; stage management by Kelsey Nicole Jenkins. Developmental reading: Monday, October 19, 7pm, Ripley-Grier Studios. Free with RSVP. Content note: This play explores themes of suicidal ideation, held with humor, tenderness, and vulnerability.
