About This Show

Carlton J. Smith is proud to salute two of the most celebrated love men in the history of R&B….MARVIN GAYE and TEDDY PENDERGRASS.

Carlton J. Smith (Soul Brother Number New) will take the stage for a show that will celebrate a musical legacy spanning the 60’s on into the 80’s.

A few years back, Carlton J. Smith produced a show at B.B.Kings entitled, “The Men Of Soul” in which he honored everyone from Curtis Mayfield to Barry White. The Marvin Gaye/Teddy Pendergrass segments of that show went over so well that he knew one day he’d have to do another show featuring the music of these two giants.

Having started out as the lead singer for the 70’s standup vocal group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass’ distinctive baritone scored hit after hit for the group. “The Love I Lost”, “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”, “I Miss You”, “Bad Luck”, and the ever inspirational “Wake Up Everybody” are just a few of the classics they dominated the charts with.

After leaving the group in 1977, Teddy Pendergrass went on to become the biggest male superstar since the heyday of Al Green. His “FOR WOMEN ONLY” were the stuff of which legends were made.

At this point what can be said about the late, great Mr. Marvin Gaye?

The prince of Motown, the tortured genius, the troubled soul, the creative spirit – he was all of these things and many more and as a result he created some of the greatest music ever recorded.

From the world weary view of “What’s Going On”, to the lustful vision of the eternal bedroom classic, “Lets Get It On” and “I Want You” not to mention his early sixties material which helped to create the Motown legend, Marvin Gaye was first and foremost an artist in every sense of the word.

He was brutally honest, and sincere in regards to his craft and that’s all you can ask of a man and his music.

May he rest in peace.

Come and enjoy an evening of brilliant music, great singing, goodwill and lots of fun on January 2nd as Carlton J. Smith and his merry band of musicians and singers descend upon the main stage at B.B.Kings and prepare to entertain you all night long.
