Chris Thile (of Punch Brothers) is to the mandolin as Yo-Yo Ma is to the cello—the instrument’s unchallenged master virtuoso. With his broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical rock, and jazz, he transcends the borders of conventional genres. Recently awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (aka “genius grant”), Thile also won a 2013 Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions and he releases a CD of Bach Sonatas and Partitas this spring. His program draws from this new Bach recording while also exploring his own compositions and contemporary music.
