About the Show

Theatre Pro Rata presents the Midwest premiere of Emma, by Howard Zinn (author of A People’s History of the United States). Carin Bratlie directs.

Emma is a politically sparked play about the life of Emma Goldman, a 1900’s activist eventually deported for her opposition to WWI. The play delves into the lives of immigrant laborers and Emma’s impassioned desire to improve the working conditions in the early part of the last century. Emma, a gifted orator, was infamous for her support of unionization, free love, and birth control as well as her opposition to Capitalism. Her story is almost unknown: not taught in schools, not addressed in mainstream history books, and silenced by the Red Scare. But her fight for the lowest of society is noble and patriotic and should be told.
