New York City
Syncopation is a romantic comedy which takes place on New York’s Lower East Side in 1911. Henry Ribolow, a Jewish meatpacker who lives with his mother, rents a drafty, dusty dance loft once used by Irene and Vernon Castle, the most famous dance team of the era. He advertises for a woman with a desire to be a ballroom dancer. The ad is answered by Anna Bianchi, a young, liberated Italian woman who sews beads on ladies clothing. Anna is not a dancer, but wants to learn and gradually comes to share Henry’s dream of one day dancing for royalty. Their relationship changes and develops as they find the freedom of the dances they share. John Manfredi directs.
