Silvia Westermann (Castillo’s widow) will discuss Chilean artist Sergio Castillo (1925-2010) who was the first Chilean artist to create large-scale metal sculptures. Castillo studied in Paris at the Ecole de Beaux Arts and the Academie Jullian de Paris, in Chile at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile, and at the Art Student League in New York. Castillo was in residence at Boston University in 1985 and BU is home to three of his works, Explosion in front of the Metcalf Science Center, Earth Orbit in the Questrom School of Business, and Free at Last in the Marsh Chapel Plaza. His sculptures can also be found in Beijing, Madrid, New York, and Santiago. He won numerous awards for his work, including a Fulbright Scholarship.
