La Cage aux Folles is based on the French film by Jean Poiret and was brought into the mainstream through the movie The Birdcage, which starred Robin Williams. The play tells the story of a gay couple and the antics that ensue when they pretend they are heterosexual in order to fool their son’s fiancee’s ultraconservative parents. A story about love and tolerance, many of the show’s themes are sung through the Cagelles, a group of drag queen dancers in a St. Tropez nightclub. Notable songs include “I am What I am” and “The Best of Times.”
Presented by The Longwood Players.
Additional performances: Thursday, April 28 at 8pm, Saturday, April 30 at 2pm.
