About the Show

The Charlestown Working Theater presents Theatre Kranevit from Berlin, Germany and the U.S. premiere of their original performance, Jorinde and Joringle, based on the tale by the Brothers Grimm and featuring puppet and mask actress Mo Bunte and musician Anna Katharina Kaufmann.

Jorinde and Joringle tells the tale of a couple who are caught in the spell of an old witch. The witch lives alone in a huge, thick forest, and she has imprisoned seven thousand rare birds to sing for her pleasure. When the sun goes down an owl circles the couple three times, and Jorinde is turned into a nightingale. Joringel is extremely sad but not very brave. How can he get his beloved Jorinde back? The fusion of improvisation, composition, and collaboration, combined with unity of sounds, dance, figures, masks and music, create magical images and apparent weightlessness in the remarkable style of Theatre Kranevit.

Jorinde and Joringle has toured throughout Germany, in Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Iran. This performance is about the unity of form and plot, timelessness and the present, age and youth, tradition and personal happiness in performing.
