South African guitarist Derek Gripper produces extraordinary music by fusing his country’s disparate creative traditions with styles found throughout the world. He transcribes the works originally written for the 21-string kora (harp lute) for a six-string classical guitar while also drawing on Cape Town’s folk music, European classical traditions, avant-garde Brazilian works, and even Indian classical music. In a truly virtuosic performance, Gripper performs with pioneering cello player, composer, and Silk Road Ensemble member Mike Block.
