About This Show

The Tempest is a lighthearted fantasy about a queen and her court that are shipwrecked on a mysterious and magical island off the coast of Yucatan. They are changed by the magic of the island’s Mesoamerican inhabitants and the sorceress Prospera. The Spanish prince finds love, the sorceress finds mercy, and the earthy Caliban finds wisdom. This play is set near the 16th century in Mesoamerica. The conquistadors learn lessons from the Mayans. Traditional male roles of Prospero, Alonso, Gonzalo, and Ariel are played by women, emphasizing maternal relationships. Ancient American music, instruments, dancing abound.
