This is Benjamin Britten’s 1954 opera based on the Henry James ghost novella. Re-set on a remote Louisiana plantation in the Deep South, this tale of good versus evil, natural versus supernatural, possession and exorcism, is a fascinating foray into the haunted world of a young governess and her two adolescent charges. Oakland Opera Theater Artistic Director Tom Dean helms Turn of the Screw, featuring a live 13-piece orchestra under the musical direction of Deirdre McClure. Acclaimed Bay Area soprano Anja Strauss and tenor Gerald Seminatore lend their artistry as the governess and otherworldly man servant Peter Quint in this "steamboat gothic" operatic chiller, also featuring high-flying aerial performance artists The Starlings Trapeze Duo.
