About This Show

The Vagina Monologues is based on interviews by Obie Award-winning playwright Eve Ensler with more than 200 women of all ages and backgrounds. Ensler said she wrote the theater piece to “celebrate the vagina.” Some of the monologues are, indeed, celebratory in nature; others are humorous, touching and affirming. Some deal with serious issues, such as rape and molestation. No matter what the issue, one thing is clear: You don’t have to have a vagina to appreciate The Vagina Monologues.

New to the program this year is a Vagina Wall Hanging, which theater goers will pass through on their way into the theater. All women are invited to contribute to the wall hanging by bringing to the performance a small item representing themselves. Items will be attached to the Vagina Wall Hanging throughout the summer.

On Saturday, July 14, Divine Entertainment will give a special performance to benefit two non-profit organizations for women: Independence House, a shelter for battered women and children, located in Hyannis, MA and Helping Our Women, an organization based in Provincetown, that provides rides to medical appointments and monthly stipends to women who are chronically or terminally ill.

V-Day was born in 1998 as an outgrowth of The Vagina Monologues. It proclaims Valentine’s Day as V-Day until the day violence stops and women everywhere live in safety. Then V-Day will be known as Victory Over Violence Day. Today, V-Day is a global movement to raise awareness and stop violence against women and girls.
