About This Show

Chicago Children’s Theatre takes on America’s favorite pastime with the Midwest premiere of Honus and Me. Performed in the Goodman’s Owen Theatre, which will have both the look and excitement of a real baseball stadium, the play focuses on the Honus Wagner T-206, which has been described as the “Mona Lisa of baseball cards.”

Joe Stoshak, a young baseball fanatic, stumbles upon the most valuable baseball card of all time – an Honus Wagner T-206 – while cleaning his neighbor’s attic. The card acts as a portal between Joe and Wagner’s lives, and young Joe is suddenly transported back in time to the seventh inning of the 1909 World Series, where Wagner imparts upon him the confidence and wisdom he needs to succeed not only in baseball, but also in life.

Honus Wagner, who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the early 1900s, is regarded as one of baseball’s greatest all-around players. One of the first players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Honus’ baseball card, the Honus Wagner T-206, is one of the most famous and valuable baseball cards in existence. In 1909, Wagner had his baseball card recalled because as a non-smoker, he objected to the sale of his card with tobacco and did not want to set a bad example for children. In February 2007, a Honus Wagner T-206 baseball card sold for a record $2.35 million dollars.

Adapted for the stage by Steven Dietz, Honus and Me is based on the book by Dan Gutman. Sean Graney directs.

The production is supported in part by the Chicago Cubs and Cubs Care.

Recommended for ages 7 and up
