Provision Theater Company presents the remount of the 2004 Jeff-nominated and After Dark award-winning production of Harry Chapin’s Cotton Patch Gospel, featuring music and lyrics by Tom Key and Russell Treyz. Jim Poole directs.
Featuring Provision’s Founding Artistic Director Tim Gregory and the Cotton Pickers Band, this musical features the reverential retelling of the Gospels of Matthew and John in a contemporary southern setting, set to bluegrass music. The award winning musical is based on the book The Cotton Patch Version of Matthew and John by Clarence Jordan, a Bible scholar and civil rights activist. Chapin, composer of such well-known hits as “Cat’s in the Cradle” and “Taxi,” created this production’s musical score. Dave Marsh of Rolling Stone described “Cotton Patch Gospel” music as “some of the best songs Harry Chapin ever wrote.”
