About This Show

The one-act play, The Empty Chalices by Judy Veramendi is based on the life and poetry of Delmira Agustini, a revolutionary poet from Montevideo, Uruguay. Born in 1886, an oppressive time for women, Augustini managed to produce magnificently original poetry until she was murdered at the age of 27, by her ex-husband in an act of murder – suicide. Ms. Veramendi weaves important passages of Augustini’s short and tragic life with verses from several of her most celebrated poems, and gives the audience an indication of her complex life and her works. Rosario Vargas directs.
