The American Demigods present Lysistrata 3000. The production sets the classical Greek premise of women holding a sex strike to end a devastating war in the far future of New Athens. The bawdy comedy of the Aristophanes original is blended with character driven drama and epic scope. The inaugural production of the American Demigods, written and directed by Rory Leahy.
The play uses the perennially popular ancient Greek comedy as a launching point to tell the story of New Athens, one of the last outposts of civilization in the postapocalyptic year 3000. The ambitious Chancellor Lycon is determined to crush the rebellion of the Spartan provinces and unite humanity under his rule. The brilliant and passionate Lysistrata tries to persuade her husband, the heroic but conflicted General Ajax to work for peace, but when both sides threaten to revive the ancient spectre of biochemical warfare, all hope for humanity’s very survival rests on the shoulders of Lysistrata and the brave women who follow her in forcing the combatants to choose between love and war?
