On Design: Richard Mishaan

The New York Post referred to him as “The Designer Who Dares” because of
his love for color and his fearless drive to push the envelope. Born in Colombia, Mishaan has carved out an enormously successful career by mixing styles and periods, something he has been doing with relish for more than thirty years. Apart from residences and, lately, hotels, he also designs products—everything from scented candles to delicate crystal vases—which are available at his retail store Homer in the West Village. But if there is one aspect of design that speaks to his soul, it is art. His first book, Modern Luxury touched on this. His second and most recent, Artfully Modern, explores the penetrating way in which art and sculpture occupy a permanent place in his work and in his own life. For Mishaan, the two are inseparable.
