About This Show

Stamford Center for the Arts’ Annual Black History Gala 2004 features an Art Exhibit and Reception, a New Musical Play followed by a Post Performance Gala Reception with dining and dancing. Semi-formal or African attire is suggested for this special evening.

The Black History Gala festivities begin at 6pm and continue through 7:15pm with a reception and art exhibit, Celebrating Freedom: From Heritage to Horizon in the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Gallery. The exhibit features a wide variety of art selected from 16 regional artists.

At 7:30pm an original new musical play, The Sweet Backbeat -Where the Music and the Soul Meet, directed by Lynne Colatrella, introduces some of the region’s hottest talent, ages 16 through 62, focusing on jazz, blues, R&B, gospel, hip-hop, rap and neo-soul for all generations. The show features Alfa Anderson, one of the original lead singers of the popular disco group, Chic, whose million sellers included “Le Freak, “Good Times” and “I Want Your Love.”

The Post Performance Gala Reception, featuring dining (provided by Warren’s Kitchen) and dancing (with Tony Harrington and Touch Band), is scheduled to get underway at 9:30pm.
