Compleat Female Stage Beauty centers on the fascinating true story of Edward Kynaston, a renowned actor in 1660s London, celebrated for his genius at playing female roles. When King Charles II responds to the request of his mistress — the infamous Nell Gwyn — and lifts the ban on women appearing on the English stage, Kynaston’s world collapses. Consumed by vengeance, Kynaston regards Mrs. Margaret Hughes, the first English “act-ress,” as his bitter rival and the cause for his downfall. Only when his former-dresser, Maria takes it upon herself to make him into the man he never was, does Kynaston discover his true destiny.
