The eternal triangle is alive and well in this gorgeous new production of one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals, Lerner and Loewe’s smash hit Camelot. An airy musical, the show tells the familiar tale of King Arthur’s love for his beautiful Queen Guinevere, and of her love for Sir Lancelot, Knight of the Round Table.
The play opens hopefully enough, with a young King Arthur nervously preparing to meet Guinevere, who has traveled from Scotland for their arranged marriage. The two young people soon fall in love, much to the delight of Arthur’s wise and magical tutor, Merlin. In order to bring peace and stability to the kingdom, Arthur establishes the Round Table, a chivalrous order of knights who dedicate their lives to righting the wrongs of those less fortunate. After hearing of Arthur and the Round Table, Lancelot arrives to fight for the King. He becomes Arthur’s best friend, and all is well — until Lancelot and Guinevere fall in love.
Filled with one memorable song after another, such as “I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight,” “If Ever I Would Leave You,” “What Do the Simple Folk Do,” “I Loved You Once In Silence,” “How to Handle a Woman,” “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood,” and of course the wonderful title song, Camelot moves every audience with the ideals and high morals of an almost perfect place.
