About This Show

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Curious Theatre Company presents a free public reading of Barrio Hollywood. This new play by national award-winning playwright Elaine Romero is the final presentation of Curious’ 2003-4 New Play Development Series. The reading is free of charge, though voluntary donations will benefit The National New Play Network, of which Curious is a member.

Primarily developed at the San Diego Repertory Theatre through a NEA/TCG grant, Barrio Hollywood has received staged readings at the World Affairs Conference at the University of Colorado, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Phoenix Theatre’s New Works Festival (Phoenix), and Urban Stages (NY).

Darkly humorous and laced with magical realism, the play explores one Chicano family’s test of strength when its boxing champion son is dealt a near-fatal blow. Set in Romero’s home base of Tucson against the backdrop of a cross-cultural love story, this kaleidoscopic play investigates matters of faith and science, life and death, guilt and innocence.
