The Way We Were is written by Jackie Taylor and Darryl Brooks. Before integration there was a thriving Black community where the rich and poor were neighbors and coexisted in harmony, sharing life’s lessons with one another. Out of that community came Black-owned businesses, thriving organizations and an entertainment culture which was so exciting, so exhilarating, and so fulfilling that it helped the Black community to survive the harsh realities of racism. This production is a history of Black dance, film, and music, reflecting on the great accomplishments of colored entertainers of the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s, which will delight, educate, and inspire.
