About This Show

Théâtre français de Toronto presents a rarely performed play by Molière: George Dandin, a ferocious comedy presenting a merciless portrait of the nouveau-riche and a faded nobility that clings to its status.

George Dandin, a well-to-do peasant, has married the young Angélique, who comes from a noble family. Her parents gladly agreed to the marriage, which made them wealthy again. Angélique despises her husband for his ignorance and lack of education. She loves Clitandre, a young gentleman who embodies her dream of a better life. With the help of her maid, Claudine, Angélique manages to deceive her husband, who eventually has to resign himself to his fate as a cuckold.

Skilfully employing humour, the play is disturbing in its resonance of our contemporary world and the ambiguity of its characters. Unable to understand or communicate with each other, they are stuck inside their own heads. George Dandin has echoes of L’École des Femmes, except here the young lady is not so innocent.

Featuring Martin Albert, Mélanie Beauchamp, Colombe Demers, Julian Doucet, France Gauthier, Robert Godin and Dino Gonçalves. Guillaume Bernardi directs.
