Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

About the Show

Though childless himself, aging football hero Brick Pollitt is clearly the favorite son and potential heir of dying plantation owner Big Daddy. But why does Brick seek oblivion in alcohol, and why has he neglected his beautiful and passionate wife, Margaret — driving her, on one fateful occasion, into the arms of his best friend?

This Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, was first performed 50 years ago, when it shocked audiences with its allusions to homosexuality and forced a close examination of the rules of social conduct. Williams revised his original script after the play premiered in 1955. The new version was presented by the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut, in July, 1974. The Stratford Festival presents the 1974 version.
