About This Show

Inspired by 19th century Japanese artist Hokusai’s series of woodblock prints called 36 Views of Mount Fuji, 36 Views is smart, visually arresting and thought provoking theatre. Japanese-American playwright Naomi Iizuka masterfully blends the traditional and the contemporary to create a provocative work that creatively melds elements of traditional Kabuki theatre with modern Western forms. The play asks subtle questions about the nature of art, how we value it, how culture is often appropriated, and, in doing so, poses similar questions about relationships between people and the power of perception.

A unique and priceless Japanese pillow book is discovered, and the repercussions on the field of Asian antiquities are enormous. When scholars, art dealers and reporters clamor over the finding, they become entangled in a web of lies and fabrications. Parts revenge play, mystery, and memory play, 36 Views unveils its essence slowly and silkily, in a series of 36 visually stunning and interlocking scenes.

Dora Award-winner David Ferry directs.
