About This Show

Ruth Maleczech of Mabou Mines collaborates with performer Jesusa Rodriguez, composer/musician Liliana Felipe, poet/lyricist Catherine Sasanov, and designer Julie Archer on Belén: The Book of Hours. Winner of a 1999 Obie Award, this multi-media production evokes the complex and troubled history of Recogimento Belén, a sanctuary for single women founded in 1683 by three Catholic priests that evolved into one of Mexico’s most notoriously violent prisons. Using the visual metaphor of a medieval prayer book that would juxtapose a page of verse with an illustration or painting, the collaborative piece presents a stunning critique of 16th century Mexico’s attitute towards women–one that still reverberates today.

There is a 4pm matinee on Sunday, December 10.
