About the Show

In 1936-37, Lillian Hellman traveled abroad, witnessing first-hand the antisemitism and fascism that were sweeping Europe. She returned to write Watch on the Rhine, a warning against the dangers of complacency in light of the fascist threat. As the clouds of war gather in Europe in the late 1930s, a leader in the German resistance, Kurt Müller (Jeff Bergquist), arrives in Washington DC, accompanied by his American wife, Sarah (Melora Marshall) and their children Joshua, Bodo, and Babette. The Müllers stay at the home of Sarah’s wealthy mother, Fanny Farrelly (Ellen Geer), who, like most Americans at that time, is unaware of the storm brewing in Europe. Also staying with Fanny is Rumanian aristocrat Teck de Branovis (Ted Barton), who, it turns out, has Nazi sympathies, and his American wife Marthe (Abby Craden).
