About This Show

Robert McCullar Productions will present a revival of The Lilies of the Field on the 40th anniversary of the release of the Academy Award winning movie which made the William E. Barrett novel famous. The classic play, adapted to the stage by F. Andrew Leslie, will be staged at the Santa Monica Playhouse in “the Other Space.” Directed by Tony Torrisi.

The Lilies of the Field tells the story of Homer Smith, who after his discharge from the army in the mid-1960’s, fixes up a bed in the back of his station wagon and wanders the Southwest, hoping to pick up work along the way. On his travels, he comes upon a run-down farm with a group of women working the fields. Hoping to pick up a day’s wages, Homer offers his services. His proposal is quickly accepted and he learns the women are a group of nuns from East Germany who speak very little English. Homer thought he would stay for just a day, but Mother Maria has different plans for him. She believes Homer has been sent from God to help them build a church. Although Homer has every intention of insisting on his pay and moving on, he stays and is drawn into the life of the nuns and the dream of Mother Maria to build a church.
