About This Show

The Syzygy Theatre Group presents the West Coast premiere of Sus, by award-winning British playwright Barrie Keeffe. Directed by acclaimed theatre, film and television director John Ferraro, Sus is presented as part of the 5th Annual Los Angeles Edge of the World Theatre Festival.

Written in the 1970s as Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government was empowered, with the British economy suffering, immigration at a flood tide, and terrorism rampant in the form of IRA, the political significance of the themes in Barrie Keeffe’s Sus are undeniably relevant to modern America. In the vernacular of the British police force, “sus” is short for “Under Suspicion.” Keefe’s harrowing play unfolds on a single long night in a police interrogation room. It’s election night, and as Detectives Karn and Wilby await the Tory landslide, they interrogate a black Suspect not for the “sus” charge he cheerily expects, but for the brutal murder of his pregnant wife. As the play unfolds truths are revealed; both about Delroy’s presumed guilt and the perversion of justice in the name of patriotism.
