South Coast Repertory presents Safe in Hell, a world premiere comedy by Amy Freed, directed by David Emmes.
In this off-beat comic take on the Salem witch trials, poor Cotton Mather’s childhood was all work and no play. He learned seven languages before he was 12, fasted (nearly starved) and ruined his eyes reading. But his father, Increase–who used to enjoy laughter before he banned it–still doesn’t think Cotton is ready for the Big Pulpit. There’s so much pressure being a Puritan! Maybe it’s time for a mock exorcism or a kangaroo court. After all, if people don’t believe in Satan anymore, Cotton and Increase are history.
