About This Show

LA Opera presents Porgy and Bess, an American operatic masterpiece, directed by Francesca Zambello. Porgy and Bess, by George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin, is a classic story of love found and lost, set in Charleston, South Carolina’s Catfish Row, the African-American neighborhood of early 20th Century. Porgy, a disabled beggar, meets Bess after a card game goes awry. The two fall in love while coping with the struggles of the hard neighborhood. But alas, Bess hopes for an easier life, and follows temptations to New York City.

George Gershwin’s unique score, which blends blues, Tin Pan Alley and opera, and includes some of the composer’s most memorable songs: "Summertime," "It Ain’t Necessarily So" and "Bess, You Is My Woman." Captivating audiences for over a century on Broadway and the opera stage, Porgy and Bess is a historical musical treasure.
