Sally Field and Mimi Kennedy are Laura Bush in Tony Kushner’s Only We Who Guard the Mystery Shall Be Unhappy at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood. Charlayne Woodard also joins the cast. Philip Himberg, the Producing Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program, is set to direct the benefit performance. This special engagement is to benefit the Progressive Democrats of America and
the Progressive Majority. The play is a substantial, sophisticated, and often hilarious argument against the Bush presidency and the current administration’s foreign policy.
This passionate work opens with Laura Bush reading The Brothers Karamazov to three dead Iraqi children recently killed by American bombs. Mrs. Bush proceeds to read from Dostoyevsky’s classic novel to
the dead children, “I’m sorry you are dead, but all children love books.”
