About This Show

Fate of the Monarchs uses sights, sounds, and stories from the monarch butterfly migration to Mexico to illuminate the lives of five men. Anchoring the story is Harlan, a small-town auto mechanic, torn between duty to wife and child and his sexual desires for men. Harlan’s migration to the streets of Los Angeles brings him into contact with a self-destructive dating guru, a lonesome candle-maker, a celibate preacher, and a Bulgarian prostitute longing for transformation. Like monarch butterflies, the characters of the piece might be dismissed by some as fragile or frivolous, but they’re united by a spiritual drive to find the place where they belong. They travel great distances and expend their life’s energy searching for an elusive Mexico and in the process, embody the paradoxical strength and fragility of humankind.
