As the first Black American becomes president of the United States, New Village Arts is producing a play that is set at the dawn of the Civil Rights movement. Bulrusher is about a young black woman raised in the predominately white town of Boonville in Northern California. An orphan who was found floating in a basket on the Navarro River, Bulrusher has a gift for telling the future through water, which alienates her from the local townspeople. On a rainy night, a young woman comes into town from Alabama and forces Bulrusher to question who she is and where she comes from. Through the course of their relationship, the two women make discoveries that will change the rest of their lives. The play includes original music composed by Ms. Davis and performed by actors Tim Parker and Grandison M. Phelps, III.
