About This Show

Scottsdale Center for the Arts and Arizona Theatre Company?s Genesis: New Play Reading Series presents readings of three new plays by Arizona playwrights. Each script is showcased in readings, followed by an open discussion between audience, playwright, director and cast.

SCHEDULE:

Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 PM

Trucker Rhapsody by Toni Press-Coffman, a Tucson playwright.

A rhythm driven, sometimes comic, passionate play about the ways in which violence transforms people?s lives. The story takes place during and immediately following the Los Angeles riots, and in the present. One of Reginald Denny?s attackers (Damian Williams) has been arrested again ? this time for murder. The story moves back and forth in time, chronicling the riot and subsequent trial, and the characters? response to Williams? new arrest.

Monday, April 29 at 7:30 PM

The Recipe Man by Kate Dahlgren, a Tucson playwright.

Based on a true account of an American soldier who was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines during WWII. Throughout the horrific ordeal of The Bataan Death March and his subsequent three years of imprisonment, he collected recipes told to him by fellow prisoners, who, though dying or suffering from torture, disease and malnutrition, were obsessed with, yet somehow nurtured by, the memories of food from their pre-war days. It is a moving story of survival.

Monday, May 13th at 7:30 PM

Fruit Salad by Ashley Davidson, a Flagstaff playwright.

This comedy about a young man slowly dying from a brain tumor won an ariZoni award for Best Original Script. Davidson has now expanded this inspired and dazzling piece from a one-act to a full length play.

Admission is free, although donations are welcome to help defray expenses. Seating cannot be reserved in advance and is based on a first-come basis.
