Eleven children and one adult were injured at the Gershwin Theatre at approximately 5:12pm on Wednesday when an escalator malfunctioned and suddenly jolted forward, according to CBS News. All 12 were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries. According to the police, the malfunction occurred after a child’s shoelace became stuck in the escalator.

The Gershwin is the longtime home of Wicked, which has played the venue since opening in 2003.

Wicked typically performs two shows on Wednesdays, one 2pm matinee and one at 7pm. The evening performance went on as scheduled.
