The Book Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish to Receive Musical Treatment in New Concert
Stories of well-known Jewish personalities will be celebrated in song.
Producer Daryl Roth, in association with Harbor Entertainment, has announced plans for a five-week run of the new show Stars of David, based on the book of the same name by Abigail Pogrebin. The concert will be presented from November 13–December 15 at the DR2 Theatre.
The musical adaptation of the book will present, in song, the stories of a host of Jewish personalities including Gloria Steinem, Kenneth Cole, Fran Drescher, Leonard Nimoy, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Joan Rivers, Tony Kushner, Mike Wallace, and Norman Lear, among others.
Among the show's writers are well-known composers, lyricists, and librettists such as Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line), Marilyn and Alan Bergman (Yentl), Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof), Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater (Spring Awakening), Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, Or Change), Richard Maltby and David Shire (Closer Than Ever), Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), Michael Friedman (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), Amanda Green (Hands on a Hardbody), Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller (The Burnt Part Boys), Susan Birkenhead (Jelly's Last Jam), Gaby Alter and Itamar Moses (Nobody Loves You), Daniel Messé, and others.
The cast of Stars of David will include Janet Metz, Alan Schmuckler, Aaron Serotsky, and Donna Vivino. The show was conceived by Aaron Harnick and Abigail Pogrebin and is directed by Gordon Greenberg.
