Meryl Streep to Receive Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's Monte Cristo Award
The three-time Academy Award winner will be recognized for her contributions to American theater.
The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center has announced Meryl Streep as the recipient of the 14th annual Monte Cristo Award. The award recognizes significant achievements in American theater. Streep will be honored at a gala dinner in New York City on April 21, 2014. Her friend and fellow O'Neill alum Joe Grifasi will present the award.
"The O'Neill is a place unlike any other," Streep said. "I'm honored to receive this award from an organization so vital to the discovery and support of new artists and work for the American theater, including my friend and Yale classmate, Wendy Wasserstein."
After studying at Yale and the O'Neill in the 1970s, Meryl Streep appeared in Shakespeare in the Park and on Broadway, and later broke into film. Since then, she has been nominated for an Academy Award 17 times, and has won three. Among her well-known films are Sophie's Choice, The Hours, The Devil Wears Prada, and The Iron Lady. She will also star in the upcoming film adaptations of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play August: Osage County and Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning musical Into the Woods.
