The new film version of Athol Fugard’s “MASTER HAROLD” and the boys, directed by Lonny Price, will be featured as part of the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. The screening will take place at Quad Cinema on Wednesday, May 4 at 6pm.

Based on Fugard’s play of the same name, the film takes place in South Africa at the beginning of the apartheid era when institutionalized racism started. It’s the story of Hally, a vulnerable teen-ager (Freddie Highmore), who is torn between love of his racist, alcoholic father and his love for Sam (Ving Rhames), a black employee in his mother’s tea room.

The film’s cast also includes Patrick Mofokeng and Jennifer Steyn.

The screening at the Quad will mark the 29th anniversary of the opening of the Broadway production, in which Lonny Price portrayed the role of Hally.
