Brian Sutherland will replace Scott Bakula as family patriarch Charlie Anderson in the critically acclaimed production of the Tony Award-winning musical Shenandoah at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. Bakula will leave on April 30 as per his contract, and Sutherland — who has been his standby — will take over the role as of May 2. The show is scheduled to run through May 21.

Shenandoah is directed by Jeff Calhoun and co-stars Megan Lewis and Noah Racey. The show has a score by Gary Geld and Peter Udell and a book by Udell, James Lee Barrett, and Philip Rose; it tells the story of a Southern family with seven children that manages to stay unvinvoled in the Civil War until a Yankee soldier mistakes the youngest son for a rebel soldier.

Sutherland’s Broadway credits include The Sound of Music, 1776, and Steel Pier. He played Starbuck in the New York City Opera production of 110 in the Shade and was recently featured in the national tour of Disney’s On the Record.
