Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along Will Transfer to London's West End
The musical is scheduled to move from the Menier Chocolate Factory to the West End's Harold Pinter Theatre.
This U.K. production of Merrily We Roll Along is definitely…rolling along merrily. Due to high demand and great critical acclaim following its sold-out run at the the Menier Chocolate Factory (an off-West End theater), this Sondheim favorite is scheduled to transfer to the West End's Harold Pinter Theatre for a limited 12-week run. Previews will begin on April 23 in advance of a May 1 opening.
Merrily We Roll Along, featuring Tony Award nominated music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, follows the changing relationships between three friends over three decades -- by journeying backwards in time. The score includes some of Sondheim's hits, including "Good Thing Going," "Not a Day Goes By," and "Old Friends."
The production stars Tony nominee Jenna Russell (Sunday in the Park With George) as Mary Flynn, Mark Umbers (Sweet Charity, Chocolate Factory) as Franklin Shepard, and Damian Humbley (The Last Five Years, Chocolate Factory) as Charley Kringas. The cast also features Olivier nominee Josefina Gabrielle (Sweet Charity, West End) as Gussie Carnegie, Clare Foster (Crazy for You, Regent's Park/West End) as Beth, and Glyn Kerslake (Road Show, Chocolate Factory) as Joe Josephson. The ensemble includes Matthew Barrow, Martin Callaghan, Amanda Minihan, Kirk Patterson, Amy Ellen Richardson, Ashley Robinson, Robbie Scotcher, Zizi Strallen and Joanna Woodward.
The production is helmed by Maria Friedman, making an impressive directorial debut. Friedman already led Merrily to a Critics' Circle Award win for Best Musical (New or Revival). The show also displays the talents of Jonathan Tunick (Orchestrations), Soutra Gilmour (Design), David Hersey (Lighting), and Gareth Owen (Sound).
