Lesli Margherita, original cast member of Matilda The Musical on Broadway, will return to the Shubert Theatre in the role of Mrs. Wormwood beginning September 6. The role is currently played by Amy Spanger.
Since creating the role of Mrs. Wormwood on Broadway, Margherita has gone on to star as Mona Kent on Broadway in Dames at Sea and recently concluded a run in the new work A Scythe of Time at the New York Musical Festival. Margherita is the recipient of the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for her performance as Inez in Zorro The Musical in London's West End. Her numerous stage credits also include Man of La Mancha, Kiss Me Kate, and more.
Featuring a Tony-winning book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, Matilda is inspired by Roald Dahl's novel of the same name and tells the story of a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence, and psychokinetic powers. The production has sets and costumes by Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, and sound by Simon Baker.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, the musical began performances March 4, 2013, and opened April 11 of that year. It will end its run at the Shubert Theatre on January 1, 2017, after 37 previews and 1,555 performances.
