According to a Tweet and photo from the official The Lion King account, the Broadway musical favorite will join First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House for the Kids State Dinner on July 18. Adding credence to the report, Mrs. Obama's official account has re-Tweeted the post.
The Kids State Dinner is an event that welcomes 54 children and a parent or guardian to the White House to dine on a selection of healthy recipes that won the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. For the third year, the contest invited a parent or guardian to work with his or her 8- to 12-year-old child to create an original, healthy lunch recipe.
Disney's The Lion King opened on Broadway in 1997 and features a score by Elton John and Tim Rice, with additional musical material by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor, and Hans Zimmer. Since its premiere, the Julie Taymor-directed production has been translated into eight languages and has played 18 countries. Productions of The Lion King can be seen on Broadway, on tour across North America, Tokyo, and Japan, on the West End, and in Hamburg, Madrid, and São Paulo.
