Adapted for the stage from Anton Chekhov’s short novel by Morton Paglin, Three Years is a turbulent Russian love story. Alexey Laptev, from a wealthy Moscow family, falls desperately in love with a beautiful young woman who marries him to escape dreary provincial life. But Laptev soon grows deeply unhappy, married to a woman who does not love him and shares none of his interests. Julia, his young, high-spirited wife, finds her gloomy husband unattractive and at odds with her enjoyment of Moscow social life. Each seeks consolation in different ways while trying to keep the household together.
In true Chekhovian fashion, these characters suffer when denied what they long for, but are profoundly disappointed when their dreams are realized. Family conflicts–personal and political–heighten the drama, as Russia drifts toward the collapse of the Tsarist regime.
There is no performance on Thursday, November 23.
